What is Sankofa?
Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana; in the Twi language meaning, "go back and get it." It is important for us to remember the past, as it will help us heal our future.

Nate Hurse, MSW, MDA, MSW, LICSW, LADC
Nate is a master-level social worker with over 25 years of expertise in the areas of clinical and program development, substance use disorders, and cultural sensitivity to a diverse group of minorities. He is also a licensed alcohol and drug counselor with the state of Minnesota, state of Connecticut and a Certified Addiction Counselor with the state of Connecticut and California.
Nate is a SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) and a NADA-RT. Vice President and Board Member of the National Acupuncture Detox Association Having worked in Connecticut, Indiana and spending the last 20 years in Minneapolis at various chemical health treatment centers working with culturally diverse populations. Nate is also a consultant with the Minnesota DHS ADAD chemical health division as a Peer Reviewer. Nate is Sankofa's founder and principal therapist.

Rashida Fischer MS, LPCC, LADC
Rashida has over a decade of professional experience in addiction and co-occurring mental health treatment delivery, clinical Supervision, and program development. Rashida specializes in Culturally Responsive Care, Trauma Informed Service Delivery, and Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment. The foundation of Rashida’s work is a passion for social justice. She is a counselor educator. Rashida provides consultation services for staff and program development. Rashida utilizes a solution-focused, positive psychology/ wellness counseling model when working with clients that recognizes the importance of people’s environments and the multiple contexts that influence their lives, and honoring cultural values and promoting empowerment and growth. Rashida believes that positive change can occur through building on individual's strength and focusing on the power of relationships by identifying the resilience of individuals and families and focuses on the potentials, strengths, interests, abilities, knowledge and capacities of individuals as the primary source of healing.
